Government Ready to Support Road Safety Advocacies
The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) project about helmet use and drink driving regulations which started in 2021 is almost coming to an end. On the 29th of September 2022, we engaged stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Uganda Police and the Boda Boda industry to update them on the progress reached since the kick start of this project.
In one of the ice breaking activities, participants were encouraged to share testimonies relating to helmet use. Maria N Nkalubo, the Principal Operations Officer Emergency Medical Services at the Ministry of Health narrated the painful tragedy of losing a loved one who got involved in a motorcycle crash and got a head injury from not wearing a helmet.

Later during her presentation, Maria highlighted that without data, one only has an opinion and that is why the Global Status Report on Road Safety that is in the pipeline should be given paramount priority.
According to SP Oinebye K Bruno, out of about 750,000 motorcycles in areas of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) streamlining of Boda Boda 2022 registration exercise, only 6% of riders have riding permits which is contributing to the increasing carnage situation in Uganda.
